My Students

You know that feeling you get after you read a good book? The kind of feeling where the characters stay with you and you keep thinking about the story. Well, my students had that feeling recently when they read a book called Tyrell by Coe Booth.

While reading this book, I had to miss two days of school, and the sub told me they just came in and read.

Some read with each other, while others read silently, but they all read! That's never happened before. I teach in a school located within our county jail. My students are young men who are being detained while awaiting trial or sentencing. I have a variety of reading levels in my classroom, but the predominant level is somewhere around fifth/sixth grade.

My Project

Tyrell told the story of a sixteen year old African American boy whose father is in jail and whose mother wants him to sell weed to support the family, who are currently homeless. Meanwhile, Tyrell has dreams of being a DJ. I bought ten copies of these books with my own money, for I had a feeling my guys would like them. I was right! Imagine my surprise when I found out Coe Booth, the author, published a part II in early September called Bronxwood. The only problem--they are hardcover and the price is a little too steep for me to pay on my own. I am wanting to bring this new story to my students because I have never witnessed a whole class enjoy a book so much. According to the guys in my class, they liked Tyrell because the story was real and they could relate to the characters. We're currently writing essays about the book, in which the students are either comparing and contrasting characters, analyzing the idea of lost childhood in the novel, or arguing for a theme.

As we finish these essays, I think it would be a wonderful experience to put this new novel in their hands.

These novels would benefit my class because the story is one that interests all of the students, and it's a wonderful way for me to teach the strategies one uses when reading a text.
