it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The floor is a cold hard place...
Hi. I'm Ms. P. My current class is a substantially-separate K0/K1 split in Massachusetts. The students in my room struggle with cognitive and physical challenges that make learning some of the simplest task difficult. My teaching assistant and I work hard to provide opportunities for mainstreaming with the General Education equivalent. Part of that mainstreaming is teaching them how to understand their environment.
One of the major obstacles they have is how the library should be used. Unfortunately furniture isn't distributed equally between the General Education classroom and the Special Education classrooms. We have no library furniture in our classroom. I improvise by having a crate for books while the students lay/sit on the floor. This system isn't widely used in the general education classrooms. So my students aren't prepared to use the library in those classrooms when they visit. My students love books, and the space is limited in my room. I can't always surrender a table for them or chairs if I'm using them for another activity or center.
It makes me sad to know that their sitting on the floor isn't a choice they've made, but a necessity. We really need this library couch. It offers them seating and a real library to put away books.
You will play a vital part in teaching them that a library is a wonderful place were you can relax in quite place and take a trip to wherever your books will lead you.
