From the Concrete to the Abstract: Montessori Math and Science
My students need math and science concrete materials for their new Montessori classroom to aid in the understanding of abstract concepts.

My Students
My students are an audacious group of inquisitive 6-9 year olds attending a public Montessori school on the West Side of Chicago. This group engages with materials at their own level and at their own interest level.
Students are presented a global introduction of the world, helping them learn how all parts of our universe are connected.
Students will build a sense of purpose in the world by learning about all which their curiosities will drive them towards.
We will expand our minds and hearts this year. I hope to foster a love of learning and build kind, compassionate citizens that are joyful and inquisitive learners.
My Project
Just as a carpenter is only as good as his tools, students in a Montessori classroom need materials to aid in their connection to the Elementary math and science curriculum. I am looking to add math materials to aid in the understanding of place value and multiple operations with four-digit numbers as well as support learning of the planets and Earth Science.
Through the manipulation of concrete materials, students learn to abstract concepts across the curriculum with the use of their growing imagination.
Students will reach a richer level of understanding through the practice and conversation that comes from working with these materials.
Students will be able to use the numerals to aid in work with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. With the hanging bead chain work, students will gain a richer understanding of teen numbers (the addition of a group of ten with a group of numbers under ten). Students will use the table red and blue rods for the addition of numbers under 20. Students will learn to order and read numbers up to 120 with the 120 Board. The solar system model will support in the understanding of the relationship between the planets and the sun, as well as the rotation of these planets. As a visual support to the Great Lesson of the Creation of the Universe, students will explore the formation of land with the Model of the Earth and the Volcano.
