This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In order to learn how to become better athletes, thinkers, and environmentally conscientious members of our society, my students need to experience the Pacific Ocean by riding its waves.

My students attend a low income urban school in Northern California.

The majority of my students hail from Latino, African-American, and Southeast Asian backgrounds, many of whom will be the first in their families to face the challenges of attending college and surfing the waves of the Pacific Ocean.

My Project

By renting wetsuits, surfboards, and boogie boards for this trip, my students will attempt to surf for the first time in their lives and be the first in their families to experience the ocean through this sport. Unfortunately, surfing is a sport that is traditionally off-limits to urban youth due to cost, distance from the beach, and lack of social access. However, this trip aims to dramatically interrupt this pattern.

Long-term social change is enacted not by catchy political slogans or through committed educators.

It happens through our youth expanding their horizons, overcoming challenges, and riding waves. My students need to experience the joys of surfing. Be a part of that change. Make it happen.
