Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"It is indeed ironic that we spend our school days yearning to graduate and our remaining days waxing nostalgic about our school days," Isabel Waxman said. This is true of me and so many people I know, and I want my students get that chance to have and reminisce graduation as well.

My students, by and large, are Latinos and African Americans from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and the first to attend (and graduate) college. They are smart, motivated and hilarious. They make time in my classroom fly by. In fact, time with them doesn't feel like work.

My Project

The CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) requires a lot of practice, and the CAHSEE prep books will provide my students with the practice they need to prepare for the exam. Said books have review lessons and practice tests that model the exam. This resource can help students pass the CAHSEE and graduate high school. Because of forces beyond their control, my students are at a disadvantage with the CAHSEE, but it doesn't have to be this way. This project can help my students pass the CAHSEE and gain the confidence of knowing that they are that much closer to graduating high school. But this goes beyond my current students. A high pass rate this year will also give lower classmen the confidence that they too can pass the CAHSEE. Success this year can change school culture. Success for one group will be success for all.

In order to graduate high school in California, students must pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

However, Latinos and African Americans in California underperform on the CAHSEE. In 2009, only 52.9% of Latinos, 47.8% of African Americans, and 25.6% of English Learners, a group that predominates my school, passed the CAHSEE on their first try. The state average was 65.2%. Donating to this project will help my students defy statistics and, hopefully, start a new trend.
