I am a high school English teacher who loves literature and in my classes, films are texts in which we immerse ourselves and learn about our world. Through my previous projects, I've brought outside voices into my classroom, helping my students understand what life is like in a global society and highlighting voices different from theirs.
With this project, I hope to provide students the chance to share their own stories through original films and mini-documentaries.
I teach a film analysis elective that previously ran as a single-semester course, but next year, we will expand to a full year, and while I will teach students how films are crafted and how filmmakers use visual techniques to relay their themes and concepts, I want to ensure my students get the chance to do the same.
Most of my students have cell phones, but they don't have access to HD film equipment with which they can practice the cinematography techniques they learn about in class and see on the screen. My classroom is arranged in groups of six, so I'm asking for GoPro bundles and lav microphones that will furnish equipment for every group.
All of my classes will have the opportunity to use this equipment -- much of my curriculum focuses on the individual and how one's community shapes their identity. I would love for my juniors to see their world through a new lens, sharing their personal experiences. I would love for my freshmen and seniors to tell new stories inspired by our class discussions, both documentaries and fiction projects.
So many of my students share my love for film and filmmaking, and if I can provide them with equipment to explore their passions, I can teach them more ways to use their voices in their world.
