Thirty minutes a day to do nothing but relax and read a good book! My ninth grade advisory class contains 15 students at a variety of reading levels. During our daily independent reading time, my students choose books from a small classroom library (greatly enhanced by previous DonorsChoose donations!).
For some students, however, choosing a book isn't easy, and reading time is more painful than fun. Some of my students have never had the experience of finishing a book -- not because they didn't want to, but because they have never been introduced to literature that speaks to them.
My classroom library could desperately use more titles for reluctant readers. I have selected books based on American Library Association recommendations. I have also followed students' requests for books with drama, "killing," realistic situations and relationships; graphic novels; and horror and romance novels. Just like adult readers, teen readers want stories that will grab their attention!
With your help, I can turn reading time from a daily chore to a highlight. My goal is for each student to finish at least one book by the end of the school year. Once my reluctant readers pass that hurdle, I have found they are much more likely to read on their own. Your contribution will go a long way toward helping my students become lifelong readers.
