From Plants to Microworlds: Fun with Microscopes!

My students need 15 microscopes that will activate their inquiring minds and foster their love of learning.

My Students

Elementary students are naturally inquisitive and love to explore the world around them. Sadly, mine do not have access to Science equipment on a year-round basis, and are only able to use the limited materials that come in the district-provided kits for short periods of time.

My students attend a public school in a high poverty area of a large urban setting.

Over 80% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. The truly diverse student body is comprised of students from all parts of the globe and many world religions. Our students work hard and are making huge leaps in Literacy and Math despite the challenges they face. A well-rounded education is extremely important in this global age, and to this end we are introducing and integrating more Science into the curriculum to help foster a lifetime love of learning through the joy of discovery.

My Project

I have requested 15 durable microscopes for use both in classrooms and an all-ages Science club. These scopes will be used to help our students build the important observation skills required for scientific inquiry. These "tuff" scopes are a tool built to withstand the rigors of young students, with the added bonus of the lens detaching for use outside. This will allow us to take students out to explore their world, which will inspire them to ask questions about their observations, make detailed diagrams and write about what they observe in both class and the club. Science creates and fosters a love of learning through questioning and discovery, shows our students that we are all life-long learners, creates the realization that it is important to never stop asking questions and teaches them the skills to seek their own answers.

Science builds on and fosters a love of learning, inquiry and exploration of the world that extends to all subjects and aspects of life.

To allow our students to explore and delve deeper into the world and their education, as well as provide real experiences for students to practice the academic language so many of them lack, we need access to Science materials that would otherwise be unavailable without your help.
