My Project
Tucked away in a small room of our big elementary school is my tiny but mighty speech therapy room - a hidden gem where big language dreams come to life. In this magical little space, I work with many students each week (pre-k to 5th grade), helping them find their voices through books and play.
Each month, I plan engaging thematic literacy units that center around high-quality children's books.
These themes - such as community helpers, animals (zoo, safari, etc.), gardens, or seasonal topics - not only spark curiosity but also provide meaningful opportunities to build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and target specific speech and language goals. Through repeated readings, auditory bombardment, story retelling, and language-rich discussions, my students grow in their ability to understand and use new words, express their thoughts, increase social communication, and develop foundational literacy skills.
To take this learning even further, I'm seeking support to add thematic toys and props that align with our monthly book units. Toys such as animal figures, vehicles, and play set items would help bring these stories to life, offering hands-on-ways to reinforce vocabulary, practice turn-taking, expand pretend play and social communication, and support expressive and receptive language development. With your help, we can connect reading and play to create a rich, language-filled learning enviornment where every child can grow and thrive.
