My Students
Remember the first time you made music in school? Music that you were truly proud of, that you shared, & that sparked a desire to continue learning & growing musically? Imagine if you were given the tools to continue! Imagine how your life would be different & imagine the difference you can make now!
My students are diverse in economic status, learning abilities and desires, and are eager to learn; they just need the tools and opportunities!
Our school is primarily rural and many of our students do not experience music outside of the school setting. They are hungry to learn and eager to try new things. In my decade plus experience, I have found that students who are given new opportunities to explore new and different instruments in music class are more likely to remember and appreciate what they are taught, and they are much more likely to continue independent study and growth. My students feed into a high school where the music programs are great, but rarely recruit students with instrumental experience and struggle to maintain students due to scheduling conflicts. If our current elementary students can be given the starting tools, the musical guidance necessary, and multiple experiences in their primary years, they will be much more likely to continue a lifelong musical pursuit.
My Project
If given the chance to study ukulele, our students will use them to continue learning theory and musical concepts while applying their own music expression. All of my music students study a wealth of basic musical elements, such as reading rhythms, learning harmonies, singing melodies, and identifying timbre, but additional concepts such as chord progressions, strumming patterns, the ever-important independent study, and much more can be further explored with the study of ukulele. Studying a musical instrument equips students with the skills to excel, confidence in their own musical abilities, and for some, has granted them the wonderful experience of performing in a musical concert. Ours is a high-poverty school with over 50% of our students qualifying, which means that musical instruments aren't a priority because they are a want, not a need. By providing each student with a ukulele, you are giving them an opportunity to excel!
Music uses the entire brain and is STEAM-y!
Music IS science, math, language arts, history, physical movement, and of course, art. Those who study an instrument benefit socially, academically, emotionally, psychologically, & of course, musically. Ours is a high-poverty school with over 50% of our students qualifying, which means that musical instruments aren't a priority because they are a want, not a need. By providing each student with a ukulele, you are giving them an opportunity to excel!
