My Students
My students are second graders in a small elementary school. This is a middle-class neighborhood, deemed semi-rural even though the city proper has nearly 40,000 people. That means my children tell me about their chickens and horses as well as their hoverboards and gymnastics lessons. They are taught to be hard-working and dependable, family traits that translate well to school. Our school has teachers who are teaching the children of their former students, creating a family-feeling school culture.
These children come from varying socio-economic levels, so their access to technology at home also varies.
My Project
With specific units on mentor texts and mentor sentences I will buy from Teacherspayteachers, I will teach my students a more focused, more interesting, and more sustainable style of writing. They will gain skills that will last them for years as they remember the examples they created in my class.
We will look at works by professional authors and follow their styles to create our own stories.
We will learn author craft as well as word choice, vivid vocabulary as well as voice. We will connect our writing to others' text.
