My Students

The days of learning by copying sentences from the board are pretty much gone. My students need hands-on materials to help fill the gaps in their learning. Despite passing on from grade to grade, they have a lot of the same problems constructing words that they did in their younger years.

I have an ever-expanding, but current class of thirty 3rd graders in a very family-friendly school in CA.

These kids come from a wide variety of family homes. Many of them are still learning English. A huge percentage qualify for Free Lunches. While some of their families have access to quality reading materials at home, the vast majority do not. With class sizes getting bigger each year, we are noticing that many kids are coming to 3rd grade with much larger gaps in their learning than ever before. They aren't getting the individual attention that they need at those younger grades, and because of it, are struggling more in the upper grades. Therefore, as teachers, we are trying to come up with new ways each year to meet the needs of these ever-changing children.

My Project

My students are working very hard to fill in those gaps in their learning. However, they need to try new materials and other methods, since something obviously hasn't worked in the past. They need hands-on practice constructing words, recognizing vowels and consonants, practicing vowel sounds, etc. Having a variety of magnetic letters available for them to manipulate on their whiteboards will truly help them. We will be able to use them in our reading groups with the whole class set, and then they can even keep a set at their desks to practice with when they have any free time. Because it will feel like they are playing, instead of learning, we have a much better chance at getting through to them than before.

The amazing donors from Donors Choose have been instrumental in supporting my classroom this year.

It amazes me that there are so many people willing to help children in need, & my students definitely fit that description. These magnetic letters will give them an opportunity to learn in a new way, and help catch them up to where they need to be. Most importantly though, seeing that there are such generous people out in the world, will impact them more than any of us will probably ever realize.
