My Project
I am a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Sometimes trying to verbally described an object or landmark in the environment for an individual that was born blind means nothing to them. With the 3d printer we can create things that are found in the environment or specific to the individual's route that they can tactually explore. By having this opportunity of making 3d images, gives the blind individual the opportunity to tactually explore the image and make a mental picture that is conducive for each individual based on the details they may miss by only having verbal descriptions.
This printer would also be beneficial to an individual with low vision because individuals with low vision sometimes miss a lot of detail from an oral description.
Mainly because with low vision they miss a lot of specific details for things that they may not be very familiar with because of their lack of vison. For an example, a person with low vision may be familiar with a chicken, but don't know the chicken has a beak and walk on 2 web feet legs. With this printer, those fine details can be made.
Another reason this 3d printer would be beneficial to my visually impaired students, is that they can have the opportunity to print 3d images of things they have only imagined. With this printer, they can create objects that are individualized for their individual needs. For example, to feel the shapes of the 7 continents and compare their similarities and differences. Something as simple as a hatch back car and a sedan, or feeling the difference in the frames of a two wheel bike compared to a three wheel bike. This printer would open unlimited opportunities for students that are visually impaired .
