My Students
The school year has just begun and I have had a great time getting to know my new class. The kids love to learn and are so excited to get their hands on materials again. The students in my class and my grade level are some of the most severely impacted by the pandemic. These students were in 1st grade during the shutdown. They lost months of instruction at a critical time. They then had to contend with quarantine, virtual learning, social distancing during second grade. Somehow my students persevered against the odds against them and have been learning and are working hard to make up for the lost time.
My school population consists of over 60% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunches.
We are a diverse bunch and it makes for such a special place. Every year I have more students who speak English as their second language, than as a first. I have several students from Burma who speak several languages, Chin, Burmese, and more. We have African American students, mixed-race students, and students ranging from the high ability to those needing extra help.
My Project
Every Spring our class begins the science unit on life. Every year the kids love learning about animals So I recently got a fish tank for my room. We loved it so much that I bought another tank. Now we have a full fish tank. The tank is doing so well that our guppies have had babies. Now we are ready for something a little more complex.
This spring we want to get frog eggs to study in our second fish tank.
We want to observe and learn more about their lifecycle. The kids have done a wonderful job caring for our fish. The kids have been begging me to put something new in the second tank. We have the tank all set up, we just need our frog eggs, a few places for the tadpoles to hide, and food for them.
