it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my girls have yet to discover a world beyond their concrete jungle that is fully immersed in endless educational opportunities. This could be the year that my girls finally realize their potential and self-worth as a student at Florida State University as they live out their dream.
My middle school students have endured in life what most adults never wish to experience but still have the courage to continue on.
Battling an environment plagued with poverty, drugs and gang violence, our school strives to provide these young girls with hope. The Lady Tigers has become so much more than just mere softball to our girls. For them, softball has become a way of life, a means to escape the harsh reality of their circumstances and simply enjoy being a teen. They have become like my daughters who I have adopted into my heart. Recently, I have added college tours in order to expose my girls to a world beyond their concrete jungle. Each trip conveyed to my girls that softball can unlock endless educational opportunities. Sadly, most of my girls have become fixated on the notion of perpetual failure. I refuse for this belief to become their reality and I will continue to fight for their education and be that positive male figure in their lives that will never quit on them.
My Project
Accustomed to dismal housing projects, streets riddled with filth, gang presence nearly on every street corner, etc. most of my girls do not realize places like Florida State University exist nor do they believe that they could one day step foot on a “real softball field” made of grass and dirt and not concrete riddled with broken glass. Most of my girls have never step foot out of the South Bronx, let alone New York. Therefore, a trip to Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida would be a great and awesome experience for my girls to witness firsthand how far education and softball can take them. Florida State also has a state-of-the-art softball complex which the Lady Tigers would have the privilege to practice on. In addition to meeting FSU’s softball team, the Lady Tigers will participate in a college campus tour and a state capitol tour, soaking in the rich history of FSU and Florida State itself.
Join me in conveying to Lady Tigers, my daughters whom I have adopted into my heart, that they’re not alone in their struggles.
Send girls who only know the coldness of the inner city streets to the warm hearts located under the sun at FSU. Help my girls discover a world beyond their concrete jungle so that they too may realize the power of education. My girls’ lives will be forever changed knowing that there are those who care for their education. In turn, they will start believing in themselves.
