it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
High atop the bustling streets of New York's urban jungle, a class is striving for the stars and learning about the world.
I teach 12 dear children - a combination of First and Second graders - with varying degrees of disabilities.
They are sweet as sugar and have created a lovely bond this year in our classroom. They delight in learning about animals and Science on the rare times we are able to squeeze it into our day. I would love for them to be able to celebrate the end of our school year by watching butterflies emerge from their cocoons and then releasing them into the world! We need two butterfly pavilions and 12 magnifying glasses to observe living Science in the classroom.
My Project
I can see it now. Everyday, students will come into the classroom eager to check on the progress of our butterfly larvae. They'll delight as they watch caterpillars grow. When cocoons are woven, they'll squeal with delight and excitement about what's coming: butterflies!
Can't you see their faces on the morning their butterflies come out of the cocoons? Can't you feel the joy and wonder they do as they witness this miracle of nature for the first time?
I can close my eyes now, and see my students standing in the sunny schoolyard, each marveling at the butterfly in their hand, wistfully watching it float away on the air as we float away into summer vacation. What a cherished memory this could be!
Butterflies are miraculous creatures.
They start off as one thing, a scraggly-looking worm-type thing, and end up completely different, as a delicate, beautiful winged treasure. My own students are going through their own metamorphosis. They entered school in September one way, and will leave in June as something totally different.
Let's give them the special experience they deserve.
