My students need different genres of books--such as math, environmental science, graphic novels, and mysteries--to foster their love of reading.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Weeks's classroom raised $470

My Students
New building, new classroom, no books. Oh my! When my 3rd graders start school, they enter a space full of possibilities. It's a time when they start digging deep into books for answers to their questions, cues for navigating school, and facts to astonish others--i.e., the Egyptians invented toothpaste, some dolphins are pink and live in rivers, and the Hubble Space Telescope is about as long as a school bus! They are excited for school and the possibilities it brings.
Our classroom was added to the district this year, and it does not have a single staple, piece of paper, or book.
As a new teacher, I want to give my students every opportunity, but our lack of resources makes that difficult. Coming from high-poverty communities, many of my students face challenges outside of school that affect their interest and motivation to read. Having a wide variety of books in our classroom would give them the chance to discover and foster that passion.
My Project
These books would completely change our classroom. We would share poems with our peers at the start of every day, keep books in our desk for silent reading time, and read aloud two-person sketches to the class as we practice our public speaking. The math books would help introduce the concept of multiplication, and the graphic novels would guide us as we start creating our own comics! My students would be able to recommend books to their peers and grow in their interest in reading.
By donating these books to our room, you would give my students the chance to find stories they love, foster their interest in STEM topics, and fill our room with the sounds of laughter as we enjoy side-splitting poetry.
You would expose them to enduring classics like "Bridge to Terabithia," series like "Cam Jansen" and "Nancy Drew," and award winning authors and illustrators. The addition of these books would provide us with the opportunity for every student to become excited about reading.
