From Baby Steps to Giant Steps Into Technology

My students need a computer that they can use in our computer center.

My Students

I have a class of 20 very excited and eager Pre-K students. We are in a high poverty area and most of them have never been exposed to today's technology. We are a title one school where 97% of the students receive free and reduced meals.

We are an Inner City school without any resources available.

My students are interested in the new experiences that they are receiving every day. I would also like to expose them to the wonders of a computer and get them in to technology use early in their lives. Four of my students have disabilities and delays for their age. Each of them has an attention span that is shorter that the rest of my class. Regardless of who they are, I want them to feel that they are special to me and I am a family to them through the variation of instructions I can offer in my classroom. Children at this age are developmentally ready to explore computers, and most early childhood educators like myself see the computer center as a valuable activity center for learning. We do not have a budget to purchase computers for our class.

My Project

Each year, I tried my best to improve my classroom instruction in a way that best fits my students learning styles. I have noticed how technology provided meaningful learning experiences for all my students, especially those at risk for educational failure. I believe that I can draw on technological applications to simulate my student's real-world environments and create actual environments for experimentation, so that they can carry out authentic tasks as real workers would, explore new terrains, meet people of different cultures, and use a variety of tools to gather information and solve problems. It can also can help my students develop positive cooperative learning relationships, enabling them to work together. In such relationships, they will help each other learn. Students with special needs may require more coaching in computer-based activities, but they will benefit from the experience of learning with and from other students.

Help my students take giant steps not baby steps by supporting our grant.

Reach out and give them a titanic boost. Obtaining the technology in serving at-risk students and regular students is just the tip of the iceberg. It should not just end at the computer lab. We need that extended time in our classroom. Please help me make a difference in their lives. Each baby step they take will bring them a giant step closer to the global world we live in.
