Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am part of the Head Start Program, which provides services to families in a low social and economic status. These families and students are low-income and predominantly receive free or reduced lunch. With that being said, my students have very little resources to explore their surroundings. These children are always curious when something new is being brought into the classroom. At such a young age they need to be exposed to so many different aspects of life, which in the future they can pursue.

My Project

By adding more alphabetical manipulatives such as magnetic uppercase letters and lowercase letters, alphabet pegboards, and alphabet puzzles children will be able to identify letter with a higher accuracy. The sentence strips, chalkboards and dry erase boards will give students an opportunity to practice their writing skills in a different way from what they are used to. These items can be used to make games. Adding felt stories such as "polar bear polar bear" and " The hungry caterpillar" students will be able to make their own stories to share with others. By making activities more hands-on the students will be able to engage in conversations with peers and improve language skills as well. I believe that students need as many different opportunities to reach a high level of proficiency in language and literacy. The students will have a fighting chance.
