Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of teaching a wonderfully eager group of first graders in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. Our school has shown great strides in recent years in literacy and math due to a strong school-wide emphasis on the subjects.
While I can see the growth my students are making in reading and math, I would also like to be able to provide them with some meaningful, hands on science activities that they might not experience otherwise.
In my class, students have centers that allow independent and group learning. During this time, I hope to be able to introduce them to microscopes and allow them the experience of viewing the world through a "different lens."
The microscopes are friendly enough that a first grader would be able to use them without too much adult intervention. More than anything, they can provide the students in my class with an opportunity to use forms of technology they might not see, unless they are able to make it to later grades of high school. By providing to the class tools to explore a different side of science, I hope to encourage students to see fun in education and to have something to look forward to in their later years of schooling.
