Frida Kahlo Arts Integrated Project

My students need tag board to create self-portraits. Tag board is a sturdy paper that takes all types of paint well.

My Students

Frida Kahlo is fascinating and has been quoted as saying, "I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best." I want my fifth graders to create self-portraits. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

There are about one hundred and fifty 5th graders.

They love art. They especially love art when they can create something meaningful to them. Unfortunately, most of my students do not have access to the arts outside of school. Fortunately, our school district provides a certified art teacher for them. They come to my classroom once a week for about an hour. It doesn't sound like much time, but we are able to get a great deal accomplished when we have supplies!

My Project

I chose Frida Kahlo as the artist to study for this project for two reasons. First, Frida Kahlo is in our fifth grade curriculum. Second, her self-portraits are full of symbolism. Symbolism is also a feature of understanding literature. This makes the project arts integrated. Frida chose symbols that were meaningful to her. I want my students to create self-portraits with crayons and markers that contain symbols meaningful to them. This makes their work more personal and engaging. They can connect and share in a non-threatening way. They need tag board to create these self-portraits.

These students will have access to appropriate text about Frida Kahlo.

They will be able to create a self-portrait that speaks of who they are and tells their story. They will use symbolism to establish theme. This will give them the opportunity to make connections across grade levels. Many children do not ever have such an opportunity. Please help me give this to my students! I'd like to continue empowering students through art!
