Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

More than 2/3 of the students qualify for free & reduced lunch. Funds are low and students' needs are high. I currently teach 3 sections of students with identified Special Education students across my Social Studies & Science classes. I also co-teach NEST Science & Social Studies for my school's Autistic students in a new hands on program designed to work with highly functional students in a more typical setting.

Every day my students work hard to meet their personalized goals and I work just as hard to help them too, especially with STEM Learning Applications.

As a teacher of students with varying needs I know all students can learn and should be challenged with rigor & relevance in a positive learning environment so that they can further develop a community understanding of the world in which they live to become real life global learners .

As a 6th as grade teacher, I know that my classes can lack exposure to Science & Social Studies concepts for background knowledge applications. As a result, I consistently use individualized & cooperative techniques to reach a variety of needs using hands on activities as much as possible.

My Project

These materials will be used to build, grow and maintain a vegetable garden with the purpose of providing a sustainable source of food for our students. Many of our students and families face some level of food insecurity and this project seeks to help close this gap and allow our families to increase their access to fresh food and improve their diets. This project also seeks to partner students of various academic skill levels together. Students from our Life Skills class will be be encourage to take an active leadership role in the creation and care of our garden.

The goal of this project is help students and families increase their access to fresh fruit and vegetables.

Additionally the students will work to grow their own food while developing STEAM related skills. Our students will establish composting to reduce waste and recycle cafeteria waste into a usable soil additive. Also students will use a water collection system to capture rain water to reduce overall water usage. Students will also chart the growth and yield of the each crop during the growing seasons. This projects seeks to incorporate many skills into a fun and exciting project which will generate a huge community outreach.
