Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is Title I and 100% of students are entitled to FREE breakfast and lunch. Our students come from diverse backgrounds including Mexico, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, and more. Our students are from a low-income neighborhood made primarily of immigrant families. Many of these students are first generation American. Despite any hardships and challenges in their lives, our students have a LOVE for reading and excel when they have access to high interest books. They adore graphic novels and books about teenagers that help prepare them for middle school. They are hard working and can't wait to get new books in their hands!
My Project
The books we want to order are books that our students wait weeks to borrow from our school library, and sometimes even then they don't get a turn to read them; our classrooms need enough books to support our readers! The books ordered include graphic novels and traditional novels in both ENGLISH and SPANISH so our students can practice reading at home in both languages.
Would you want to read a book that is ripped, missing pages, or falling apart?
Me neither! So how can we expect students to read every night if they don't have quality, current, high interest books that engage them?
These books will be labeled as "special edition" and monitored using a check out system. This will help us make sure that the books STAY in our classroom and don't disappear at home. That means that students for years to come will be able to enjoy books that they are dying to get their hands on!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
