I challenge you to find students as dedicated as the ones at my high school. They come early, stay late, and some even work through lunch. My school's start time is 7:40; however, students are frequently here much earlier. They come early for review classes and to get help with homework.
They are the most insightful, creative group of students I have had the opportunity to teach.
In addition to coming early, some stay until 4:00 or later to take advantage of the quiet work space that the school offers. After that, they go on to sports practices or games. I have no doubts that my students are some of the most dedicated in the state.
My Project
Since the 1980s, the last week in September has been dedicated to making the public aware of censorship and banned books. This year my students celebrated Banned Books Week by participating in whole-group and small-group discussion. They explored web sites about banned books and censorship and wrote about their findings.
My students were surprised to learn that many of the books they have read in school and some of their most favorite authors have been banned and challenged in the United States.
The most notable is To Kill a Mockingbird. In addition to Harper Lee's timeless novel, my students were surprised to learn that Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss has been challenged, and Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants, a favorite of most 3-5 graders, has also been banned. The list includes other classics like Lord of the Flies, The Great Gatsby, and the No Fear version of Romeo & Juliet.
I would like to create a classroom library made up of banned and challenged books throughout history. By donating to this project, you will give students to chance to read a famous banned or challenged book. Not only will these banned and challenged books be celebrated, but they will also help us start conversations regarding censorship and its place in our country.
