I am a band director teaching instrumental music to students grades 6th, 7th, and 8th in a public junior high school. Our band program is growing rapidly - a good problem to have, but difficult to provide working instruments to all. The most important aspect of being a music educator is putting the students first. Their success depends on my ability to meet each students' expectations and needs every day. Currently, I have 9 french horn players in band classes throughout the day. Four of these students are advanced band members who play on double french horns - meaning their playing abilities are not limited due to their instrument. My other five students are beginning band students who play on single french horns - which are currently limiting their success in playing to their full potential. A double french horn allows for more pitches to be played at a higher success rate. My five beginners should have upgraded to the double horn in November, but we do not have enough instruments for them to do so. Next year, only one 8th grade french horn player moves on to high school, leaving eight french horn players in our band program next year plus five more beginning french horn players. I want my band students to have the best musical experiences possible so they are encouraged and motivated to want to continue in their musical endeavors. My hope is that they will take with them an appreciation for music, and for some continue their education in college with a music scholarship. We are in desperate need of more quality double french horns, and are seeking your help.
