Freedom to Learn in Flexible Seating!

Help me give my students Kore Kids Wobble Chairs, Wobble Cushions, Kids The Surf Portable Lap Desk/Laptop Stand/Writing Table, rolling stools, and adjustable floor chairs!

My Students

My students are a sweet young bunch! They are a diverse group of learners in a Title I school, which means a majority of the school's population is made up of low income families. The number of students in my homeroom this year is higher than usual. My classroom is also host to transitional special education students, which adds to my roster during different periods throughout the day.

The problem is that we are working in the same space, but with a lot more people!

In order to optimize our classroom space, I am going to begin using flexible seating. Students should feel some freedom in their learning, and when other students are joining in I want them to feel like they belong. To create a fun shared space, students will be able to chose the area/type of chair they want to sit at for the day. It may be a yoga ball, a cushioned crate, a wobble chair, a bean bag, etc.

For many students, being in the classroom is a time to socialize and have some fun while learning. I am hoping that flexible seating will help to provide more of that.

My Project

The students in my class all have different mental and physical needs. Using a variety of learning modalities, while providing the best physical environment for each student is imperative to their success as a learner.

A wobble chair or cushion would give a student who needs movement the freedom to have it, while keeping them right where the teacher needs them.

A cushioned chair gives students the choice of a comfortable seat as they focus to complete their work. Rolling stools, floor chairs, and floor tables provide an additional choice of seating for students. With the use of these items in my classroom the children will gain even more independence and responsibility in the classroom, and will be able to take ownership of their learning!
