Freedom to Choose a Comfortable Work Space Inspires Creative Minds!

Help me give my students a couple of wobble chairs and cushions to help meet their need for movement during our work cycle.

My Students

Our classroom community is made up of 25 eager to learn, energetic kindergarteners. They come from diverse backgrounds and abilities, but all come to school happy to explore and work together.

We believe in "following the child"; meaning wherever the students are in their knowledge and abilities, that is where we begin teaching them.

Some students are learning the letter names and sounds and to identify numerals 0-9; while other students are reading books and are able to identify and understand place value and numbers in the thousands. However, regardless of their differences in academic knowledge, they are learning the most important things as a group; such as- how to cooperate, how to be responsible, how to be respectful and that they each have great self worth.

My Project

With the students learning on so many different levels and with their own set of gifts and talents along with challenges and hardships of the current pandemic or otherwise, I want to provide them with the freedom to choose how and where they can work that will help inspire their creativity. Several of my students have poor attention spans and difficulty sitting for any length of time. I have a student that goes to Occupational Therapy where he can use these items only during his session with the Occupational Therapist.

The wiggle seats and cushions not only help the students focus their attention on the lesson and increase the length of time they can sit, but they also help the students develop a better sense of balance and increase their core strength and postural control which is so important for many developmental tasks such as handwriting.

The requested items will be of added importance because of the need to allow for more distance between the students due to COVID-19. This project consisting of different types of seats and lap desks (for those who prefer to sit on the floor), will allow the students to choose their seat spots where they can comfortably work and have a safe distance between them and the other students.
