My Students
My classroom consists of bright students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. My students love challenging themselves in and out of the classroom, are actively engaged in the arts and sports, and love intellectual rigor. Many of my students will be the first in their families to attend college.
I teach two classes of Gifted students and one class of students within in the Great Scholar Academy.
Our school is a large public high school within a large metropolitan area. Our school is a Title I school with 100% of our school's population on free or reduced lunch. My school's culture supports and encourages intellectual rigor.
My Project
I would like resources that support my students' understanding of various types of literature. My ninth grade students will use copies of A Raisin in the Sun for a project about on freedom. The play will be discussed and will be taught in conjunction with Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech and excerpts from Nafisi's "Reading Lolita in Tehran," Satrapi's Persepolis 2, and Valenzuela's "The Censors." Students will write essays and will create various visual arts projects on freedom. Students will work collaboratively in and out of the classroom to complete various assignments within the project.
This Freedom Project will have my students read diverse literature and will show them that literature comes in diverse voices, styles, and genres.
The Freedom Project will also promote collaboration and intellectual rigor.
