Freedom of Expression

My students need bookmaking materials to create personal poetry books, journals, and/or diaries.

My Students

Our words are our most powerful tools. I want my students to realize the power personal expressions can have on themselves, their community and the world. I want my students to create their own colorful combinations of words and arts to express who they really are in their own customized books. :)

My students are hard working and engaging students who attend a public middle school, (7th and 8th grades), in Ohio.

We are a mix of cultures. We celebrate our diversity. My students are a mixture of African-American, Caucasian, and Latino. Most of my students are economically disadvantaged. I teach all types of students - identified gifted, identified special needs, Limited English Proficient and all other types of kids. My students learn in many different ways. They appreciate listening to me read a book, surfing the Internet for research, writing personal compositions, debating current topics, integrating art and technology with language arts, and listening to music.

My Project

I want my students to value what they write. By providing them with bookmaking kits instead of stapled packs of paper, they will produce books of a higher quality. They will be able to make mistakes and correct them before assembling them. I want them to be able to create a personal book of poetry, or a journal, or a diary that helps them to discover what matters most to them. The books will help the students navigate through adolescence with a voice. The saddest thing, in my opinion, to do to a child is to stifle them. It is only by expressing who we are -even privately to ourselves- that we can become the person we should be. I want them to share who they are with the class and the community. Once the books are completed, students may choose to have the books placed in the reserved section of the school library for other students to read. The reference book will allow gifted students to create their own books instead of using the kits.

What kids have to say is so important.

I want my students to learn to speak up and write out to solve problems. I want them to be the change in our world. They have such great ideas but are often afraid to express them. I want to help students learn that expression is a freedom in itself.
