My Students

My students are hard-working scholars who have opted to take one of my Advanced Placement Microeconomics course. These students in our college-preparatory public high school located in Harlem plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.

These students have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives.

They realize that education is their key to a better life, and they are willing to prioritize their education. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level. They realize that a solid education is a key to financial independence and career success.

My Project

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economists Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner is a classic. This book challenges its readers to analyze topics in a very unusual and unconventional light. It inspires critical thinking.

Through this course, I hope to share some economic principals, but I also hope to inspire a new generation of critical thinkers; this text is excellent fodder for developing analytical minds.

It challenges its readers to consider alternate explanations for a variety of real life scenarios. The unconventional explanations allow readers to feel free to think outside the box.

One of the chapters has an excellent scenario that deals with externalities. I plan to assign a case study of that chapter to go along with the externality unit in this course. And, I plan to encourage that students read other chapters on their own to help shape their own thinking on a variety of issues. I have done this in the past with great success. The students have reported back that they have had rich discussions with peers and professors about the ideas in this book once they go off to college.

Please help me provide this wonderful opportunity for my students. I hope to obtain a class set of this book - one for each student. I also am seeking one copy of Think Like a Freak - the newest in this series - so that I can look for other opportunities to utilize the works of these authors.
