Francisco Middle School is a public school in San Francisco, California. We have a diverse student population from throughout the city in grades six through eight. In the Francisco Media Academy, sixth graders learn media literacy through critical viewing, writing and producing digital media. The school district only funds the most basic facilities and curriculum. We have a computer lab with iMac computers, but no media production tools. This elective course is intended to reach student learning using popular media and video production. Students will begin to examine media with critical tools by transforming the process of media consumption into an active and critical process. Students will gain greater awareness of the potential for misrepresentation and manipulation, and understand the role of mass media and participatory media in constructing views of reality. We will explore bias and message in popular media including music, television, and film. Media Academy students will work in teams creating their own short narrative films and documentaries. The completed projects will be presented to the school community at our Spring Open House. In order to create these projects, student teams will need to use very basic video production equipment: a video camera, tripod, lighting, and boom microphone. Middle school students today are among a generation of media-saturated citizens. Media literacy is essential to critically analyze messages, to detect propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and other media. The Francisco Media Academy enables young people to be skillful creators and producers of media messages, both to facilitate an understanding of the strengths and limitations of each medium, as well as to create independent media. Through your donation, you can help our students become skilled consumers of media and active participants in independent media and citizenship.
