This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Celebrating our accomplishments brings out the best in us. My students would like to be able to frame their artwork and have it hung on display.
My students attend school in one of the most poverty stricken areas of California.
They are amazing survivors with unlimited potential. Despite the rough neighborhood, they come to school looking for an education and a way to improve their lives. Many are entrepreneurs and we strive to strengthen that quality in positive ways.
My Project
Many of my students are amazing artists. We have been looking into many art competitions and student shows, but the cost of framing is expensive. We also would like to display student artwork around the school and have our own student art shows on campus, in which we will invite the community to celebrate their accomplishments. Also, most student art shows require the artwork to at least be matted. Having a mat cutter in the classroom would tremendously cut down on the cost of preparing art for various shows and provide more opportunities for the student artists that cannot afford to pay for framing.
Many of my students are amazing artists, but many of them have very little confidence in their art abilities.
By being able to frame their work (even in a simple mat), they will see how great their work is and hear the praise of others, which in turn builds their confidence. Matting their work also opens more doors to more experiences, such as student art shows and competitions. These activities build confidence and a sense of pride in their work that cannot be built simply in the classroom.
