Fractured Fairy Tales on Stage

My Students

Next year, I will be teaching in Wichita, KS, at Christa McAuliffe Academy. There are approximately 920 students and it is the largest K-8 school in the Wichita district. I will be teaching K-5 general music as well as exploratory classes for 7th and 8th grade students.

I so excited to work with the students, parents, and staff to bring them the love and joy of music.

Christa McAuliffe Academy is in the top 1% of the most diverse schools in the state. Our school has 62% minority enrollment with 28% Asian, 12% Hispanic, and 11% Black. Our students eligible for free and reduced lunch is at 40%. I want to give my new students the best opportunities to learn.

My Project

Whether it's Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Hot, or Big Blue Riding Hood, I want to invite my students to turn familiar fairy tales upside down and inside out—and to have fun. This activity will give students a choice of three fairy tales to read. They will then be guided to choose a variety of changes, which they use to compose a fractured fairy tale to perform on stage. Useful for teaching point of view, setting, plot, as well as fairy tale conventions such as they lived happily ever after, this tool encourages students to use their imaginations, the writing process, and their performance skills at the same time.
