This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is really focused on early literacy and starting our First graders “Firsties” out strong. We have many newcomers that are not speaking English yet, so I want to implement a project that really helps them with both language development and reading. I’m the school Library Media Specialist and one of my favorite parts of my job is matching kids with books that inspire them to read!
My idea is to have our Fourth graders be the Service Stars and mentor our “Firsties” in this literacy initiative.
The books for this project include some beginner nonfiction titles and Times for Kids editions, which are always very high school interest for first graders. Having a Fourth grader read to them will strengthen the fourth graders reading skills, especially in reading nonfiction content, as well as make these titles accessible to the first graders. They will also have some bilingual books in both English and Spanish to help the newcomers gain additional language and vocabulary. While reading with the first graders, fourth graders will improve their own fluency and learn to serve as mentors helping the first graders begin to read themselves. I envision multiple readings of each book during our reading buddies meetings, and then each first grader getting to take at least one of the books they’ve become familiar with home to add to their own home library and continue reading with their family. This community service project will improve our students' reading and language acquisition, and also their families’ literacy.
