Fourth Grade Philanthropes

My Project

Our school is in a very rural area where most of the families are well below poverty level. We were talking about the word philanthropy during reading, and one of my students asked what that meant. I told them it was being generous and doing things to help others when you are able. We talked about how the holidays were an especially busy time for philanthropes.

Then one of my students said, "I wish I could buy every kid in the world a Christmas present, just to make sure everyone got something." I saw how sincere she was, and was gratified to see several other students nodding and talking about how they could help, if only they could afford it.

I have gotten 3 projects funded by Donors Choose, and I thought we might be able to raise the funds to purchase some hats, gloves, socks, pencils, a snack and something fun for every one of our 230 students. You would not only be making a brighter holiday for all those students, but also showing how we can come together to make that difference.
