About My Students

The school's has a 30 member student-led Green Team consisting of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The team is divided into 4 project groups: Beautification/Biodiversity, Energy Reduction, Eco-friendly Fundraising, and Recycling. Each team then decides on an issues within their topic that needs to addressed to make our school more sustainable. One subgroup of the Recycling team, consisting of Megan, Natalie, Katarina, Rachel, and Rong decided that too many plastic water bottles are being used in our school and they wanted to decrease the need for buying water in plastic bottles.

By creating their own problem to solve, these students will be engaging in 21st century and engineering design skills. This will lead to skills involved with problem-solving, persuasive writing, research and data-collection , collaboration with each other and other members of the school community such as administration and custodial staff, and convince others to action. The group did research about how the use of plastics affects the environment as well as the economics and energy use behind it as they came up with the problem and their solution. Their project is aligned with goals of the Green Team to promote sustainability in our school.

In Their Own Words

Students in our school need a refillable water station to drink more water and encourage recycling in school. Drinking more water can eliminate fatigue, increase energy, and focus. It also has many health benefits, such as increasing healthy weight loss and flushing toxins out of the body. Having a refillable station at our school can help the environment as many disposable plastic bottles get thrown out, contributing to landfills.

We will make the most of this leadership opportunity involved in creating this project by promoting the usage of refillable water bottles, mainly in our school store, as well as encouraging to use less plastic water bottles that will only go to the landfill. In conclusion, acquiring a refillable water bottle station will allow the usage of refillable bottles while promoting our school store in order to raise funds for other projects.

This project is important to the school community as it would decrease overall fatigue and boost overall productivity. It would also improve the health of students and teachers alike, and ensure that they will be hydrated throughout the day. Having a refillable water bottle station would also not only fix the problem of students not drinking enough water, but fix the problem of having an abundance of plastic water bottles. This will lead to less trash going to landfills.
