My Students
My fourth grade students attend a very small, rural Pennsylvania school. Many of my students come from low-socioeconomic families and a large percentage of our school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. However, our teachers embrace this rural advantage and make the effort to break the mold of the traditional classroom setting by connecting our students to their community and utilizing the plethora of resources that our country setting provides us.
Our students are continually experimenting, creating, and thinking critically.
They are passionate about learning and thrive when presented with new tools and experiences. Despite all of our hard work, many continue to struggle with the very basics of literacy, math, and STEAM learning, which all focus on skills they will need throughout the rest of their lives. With the implementation of the Common Core Standards, expectations are higher than they have ever been before. Through this project, I hope to continue to instill a love of learning in my students while helping them to become better critical thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
The Scholastic Magazine subscriptions will be used to boost fluency basics in math and writing for a strong start to the fourth grade year. Just Write! Magazine builds the skills students need to write their own informational texts. This high-quality skills book takes them step-by-step through the writing process from finding sources to drawing a conclusion. Must Know Math is rooted in multiplication and division skills, which are crucial for success in upper elementary. Each lesson presents skills through highly engaging activities that break the mold of traditional flash card memorization. I envision using these magazine as bell-ringer activities to ease students into their core instruction for the day.
As we all know, last year was one like no other, so this year it is even more important to ensure that no moment is wasted.
A strong review of foundational skills at the start of the year will allow me to guide my students through the deeper, challenging waters of the fourth grade curriculum with greater ease.
