it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My overarching goal for my students is to ensure their foundational needs are met. It is a simple fact of nature- if basic elements of life such as eating, chewing, drinking, swallowing, and sensing are atypical- it becomes difficult to perform more complex activities. Activities which include learning and communicating. A passion I hold is treating the Autistic community and performing sensory-oral-motor feeding therapy to individuals who present atypical chewing and/or swallowing patterns. I have noticed that sensory-oral-motor feeding therapy for Autistic individuals is often overlooked or done in a, although well intended, emotionally overwhelming manner.
I aim to treat my Autistic students as a whole individual by utilizing indirect therapy tools during child-led therapy such as a honeybear straw bottle and TalkTools Sensi.
In my clinical experience, Autistic children are fully capable to perform sensory-oral-motor activities… just on their own time with modifications and accommodations. Providing favored foods during treatment encounters, such as popcorn of various flavors, supports a positive and intrinsically motivating experience.
All of my students require individualized and high evidence based levels of care with their foundational needs being met. I value their uniqueness, social-emotional and sensory needs, along with their autonomous spirits which require an immense amount of built trust to aid in their growth. Receiving these items will contribute to their overall mental and physical well-being. Allowing opportunities for regulated learning experiences.
