The students in my classroom come from greatly varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students are English Language Learners or receive services under an IEP or 504 plan.
I am proud to work at a school where students of all backgrounds come together to learn, and my goal is to give each student equal footing by giving each student what he or she needs to succeed.
Having a classroom filled with enriching instructional resources will excite and inspire my students; many of whom are striving for STEM careers or to become scientifically literate citizens.
My Project
Feature articles in "Science World" run a few pages. It promotes media literacy in science through allowing us to practice skills such as asking questions, summarizing, comparing, and writing letters expressing opinions and reactions to the articles. Photos and diagrams are integral parts of the magazine, along with small abstracts of many science articles and fun, science-based contests. Every issue includes topics from each grade-level discipline - Earth, Life, Physical Science - as well as Technology and Health!
Our objectives for using this publication are to keep students updated on scientific advances, and to promote media literacy.
We will use "Science World" as a platform for students to engage in media literacy practices such as critiquing the validity of sources, defending or criticizing conclusions based on the evidence presented, and analyzing the relationship between graphics and the main messages of the articles.
These magazines will increase literacy and provide evidence that students can understand. Our subscription of 40 copies will be passed around to all science classes, over 900 students. We will receive 12 issues during the year, as well as access to the online resources.
