Fostering Future Engineers Through 3D Models!

My students need a 3D printer and pen in order to create models of projects they design in our science lab following the Next Generation science engineering and design standards.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is made up of 32 low income students, 13 girls and 19 boys. I have 19 English Language Learners who need Total Physical Response and other Visual, and or auditory scaffolds to increase their English language development. The rest of my students are reclassified English Learners. As a 1 to 1 iPad school, the students have become literate in utilizing multiple applications like iMovie, and Keynote. They are enthusiastic and highly motivated by technology, which is enhancing their learning tremendously.

My Project

As part of our science curriculum my grade level has planned science lab lessons that incorporate the Next Generation Science Standard strand of Engineering and Design. The students have experienced hands-on lessons where they go through the science engineering scientific process. For instance, we conducted the spaghetti tower challenge where they had to use raw spaghetti pasta, 2 sides of marshmallows, string and tape to create the highest tower. Having a 3D printer and pen will help students create a model of their design.

Having this 3D model will help my students showcase their science learning and display their creativity to embody the STEAM components.

They will be able to experience the engineering process, have an idea, research, design, test and redesign their project and then publish using the 3D printer. My goal is to foster the love of science to encourage my students to become scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
