Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When was the last time you enjoyed a good book? If you are a literate person you probably have a love of reading that developed early on in your education! I have many fond memories of reading with my mother and sisters. My little first graders love to hear stories and are eager to read too. However, most of them are not independent readers yet and a majority of them are reading below grade level expectations. They live in a high needs community. Many of them go home to parents whom speak and read in a primary language other than English. Some of the parents are busy with work and so many other obligations. Additionally some of the parents are challenged at modeling fluent reading. Their parents are very caring and want their children to learn, yet many of them have obstacles that get in the way of reading aloud to their child.
My work day starts with many hugs and smiles from my first graders. They are so excited to be at school and learning. They are so eager to read! Their faces light up when they hear me read and they light up even more as when they to learn to read. I want to continue to foster that love of reading and learning not just at school but in their homes too!
You can make a difference in a little first grader's life. You can be the one that makes it possible for a first grader to hear a bedtime story every night before they go to bed and help foster and nurture their love of reading! However, you will not need to stop by more than 20 homes a night to read to make this possible! Through your donation(s) I will purchase books with read along CDs so that each 1st grader in my class will be able to check out a book each night that they can listen to and read along with! Parents and siblings can listen too! I will lend out the CD players to students that don't have one. This project had no consumable materials so I will be able to use these materials for many first grade classes to come!
