This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We begin each day by reading an affirmation passage together. These passages affirm that each student in my classroom is special, important, and capable of greatness. At the close of each day our principal says, "Today's readers are tomorrow's leaders."

I desire that my students develop a positive self-concept and one day become strong, influential leaders.

I firmly believe that reading is the pathway to leading. The difficulty lies in the sad truth that the majority of my students lack a positive role model at home. Over 90% of the students in my school are eligible for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. But what they lack in their economic standing, they more than make up for in their hunger for knowledge. They are like sponges, absorbing everything that is put before them.

My Project

Approximately half of my students are English Language Learners. Many have few books at home to read and very few are ever read to at home. Having a variety of reading activities in the classroom will help my students stay excited about reading. These activities will improve their vocabulary, help with reading fluency and comprehension, and improve their critical thinking skills. The whisper phones will be an invaluable tool for the ELL children and the assessment recorder will be a useful tool not only for the students but for conferencing with their parents.

How do you lead a child to see that he is special, important, and capable of greatness?

You teach that young mind to think, to learn, to read. Your donation will help provide my students with a well-equipped classroom that will help ensure their academic success and bring to pass my principal's daily admonition, "Today's readers are tomorrow's leaders."
