We are a Title I Elementary School located in a high poverty area of Virginia. Our school has a population of 675 kindergarten through fifth grade students. Students face many challenges in their lives and our school provides them a place to be successful.
Our third graders are inquisitive and excited about new learning experiences.
They like to discuss topics with their classmates and welcome opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions which helps them expand their knowledge. It is amazing to watch their progress!
My Project
In the upcoming school year, students will participate in a Project Based Learning experience that focuses on them learning about the foster care system. They will read the Ruby Holler books with their peers and engage in discussions about foster care. Then students will brainstorm ways to explore how they can help make the lives of children better.
Our Fostering Empathy project will deepen student understanding of a societal problem by having them engage in a project based learning experience that helps them understand foster care and how it impacts children in the United States.
Students will participate in morning meetings and read books that focus on Growth Mindset. It will motivate them to improve the lives of others and to help them continue to develop empathy. They will research foster care, conduct interviews with experts in the field, and use the Developing Writing Skills to help them write and deliver a Public Service Announcement for students at our school that is about foster care. Students will develop as writers and send cards and letters to children in foster care.
