Fostering Early Literacy and Math Links with the Right Tools

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a Bilingual Pre-K class. There are approximately 418 students at my school. The whole school is 100% Title I; 90% of the students are on a free or reduced lunch program, and 76% of the student population is considered at risk.
The obstacles I see in my students’ future leaning are that parents just do not have the time to help their child/children at home, and this is not because they do not want to; but, it is because in most families, both parents have to work. I like to provide my students with lots of hands on educational experiences to further their educational awareness and skills to make up for what they lack at home.
At this age level, my students need lots of hands on activities. Exposure is a necessity in the early years, and the more expose my students are to different activities, the more they will be successful, not only in Pre-K; but throughout their educational experience as a whole. Understanding early concepts in literacy is the key to understand any other subject area. Take math, for example, how a student can understand a problem in mathematics when he/she is not able to read or comprehend what the problem is asking. Yes, it is true that all of these hands on activities will definitely help my students live my classroom with more literacy knowledge and skills; but, I am also foreseeing how much these activities will make a long-lasting impact in their lives.
As a donor, you will make a difference in the lives of my students. With your support, my students will acquire the necessary skills needed to become successful in the early years. But look further than Pre-K and try to see a future doctor, or a lawyer, or a chef, and even a great teacher. This is what I do, I live my life in the future, and I attempt to see the possibilities that my students have to offer. Nevertheless, you, as a human being, can make my students’ dreams a reality. These hands on activities are just the beginning to a dream come true.
