My Students

Do you know the feeling you get when you curl up with a great book? Or when you go to a book club and sit around the table discussing your favorite parts of the most recent read? I want my students to have this experience as they learn to Love reading in third grade.

I am excited to return to the classroom this year to teach reading and writing to a brilliant group of students who live in D.C..

Our school serves students from all over the city because it is a public charter school. In the ward where my school is located, one in three adults are functionally illiterate, and therefore, working to close the literacy gap will be our goal this year. Some of my students have hundreds of books in their shelves at home, but many of my other students do not and have not visited the public library in the past few months. I want to teach my students to find joy from books.

My Project

The beginning of school resources that I am requesting include a table for guided reading groups, a bean bag chair and rocking chair to make our "book garden" independent reading area more comfortable, and a reading stack. I am also requesting a few books that have been recommended by the newly adopted Common Core standards for literacy. My students will be able to feel at home in our literacy classroom as they take part in vibrant discussions with peers or slouch down in their rocking chair to enjoy their favorite author's book.

A literate child grows into an educated and intelligent adult who will have the skills to advocate for him or herself as well as his or her community.

I believe that all children deserve the opportunity to adopt a reading lifestyle that embodies tranquility and connection with others. Please help me provide this reading environment in my classroom this year!
