Help me give my students incentives that will help support their math fluency as long as their phonemic awareness whilst reading the cards and fostering a collaborative environment while they trade within their environment.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are in a dual language classroom setting where they find it hard sometimes to gain the confidence to speak English. At the beginning of the year, my students began to trade Pokemon cards amongst themselves which then led to them trading with students from the other classrooms. I began to see how my students started translanguaging at a faster rate and began to gain the confidence within the English language. My students went from saying "Pero por que es eso" to "Look at this power! It is cool!" Additionally, because the cards have powers and they battle given a number, the students are doing math facts at their own leisure when trading.
It builds their stamina in math and in their reading fluency through gamifying learning.
The school does a school-wide sports cards giveaway when students answer questions correctly throughout the week, but my students have found deeper connections with Pokemon cards which has strongly built their collaboration skills. My goal is to give the students these cards as a prize but also for the school because, at the end of the day, not every student is the same. If not all my students were excited about the sports cards, then that speaks the same for the school. It not only motivates my students but also the students in other classrooms. It's about fostering a motivating learning community that listens to all their needs and wants.
