This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every winter, just after the holidays, I receive 10 to 30 new students. Most of them have checked into foster care. They are new to our class, a little nervous, and just want to blend in.

I serve a high poverty community.

We have many foster-care and homeless students who often come to school in the same clothes every day, who eat all of their meals at school, and who have perfect attendance because they have no where else to go. They also take Advanced Placement classes, study hard, make up missing assignments, and want to go to college. They are, after all, just kids.

My Project

In the spring, there are no notebook sales at big box stores. Frankly, there aren't any big box stores in our community. Each new student needs to be outfitted with the basics for an English class: a notebook to write in and two stickers to keep organized. For less than $2 a student, every day is made a little easier. A simple notebook can make the difference between "outsider" and "member" in our class.

Kids in transition don't get pretty new backpacks or fancy pens, but they do deserve to learn, grow, and feel welcomed in my class.

Please help me give a simple gift with a big impact for our most fragile kids.
