Foster Creativity and Self-Esteem!

Help me give my students supplies! My cart is mostly filled with art supplies. Our budget is very tight, so purchasing clay and paint is a luxury! Having new projects for my students would be amazing for them.

My Project

Our school is an alternative school for students who have not been successful in a traditional school setting. Each of our students has an IEP that addresses educational goals due to learning disabilities or behavioral challenges that interfere with learning. Students are given a "clean slate" and have the opportunity every day to make positive choices and become better versions of themselves. We encourage progress over perfection and "Maslow before Bloom" - an educational philosophy that states that basic human needs must be met before academic learning can take place.

The art program allows students to express themselves in ways that words can't and has proven to be therapeutic.

I have worked hard to create a safe, calming, and supportive atmosphere. Staff and other students often stop in during class just to soak in the positive energy. Art education has many benefits including improved creativity, motor skills, critical thinking, cultural awareness, social emotional development, and improved academic performance.

Our budget is very limited and relies on donations for most of our supplies. Clay and paints take up a good portion of my budget, and often have to be cut in order to get through the year. Receiving this grant would allow me to add sculpture to the art program.

I started working with calendars this year after realizing that students do not know how to plan using a calendar. We created a large classroom calendar for students to complete the first of each month. They have been following the calendar and ask about upcoming events. Our DIY laminated poster board calendar is looking very tired. An actual white board wall calendar with plenty of space to write would help support development of their planning skills.

Thank you for reading and considering my request.
