My Project
I'm the new music teacher at WCE, a K-5 school in Philadelphia. The school hasn’t had music class in 15 years, so everyone at the school is so thrilled to have it again! I was hired to build this program from the ground up, and I engage the musical lives of 344 young musicians every week.
My primary goal as a music educator is to give students the skills and confidence to play music for the rest of their lives.
Some folks may go on to study music professionally, but I think it’s just as important to teach students how to make music more casually and communally. Further, learning to play an instrument is a great way to hone student’s perseverance, focus, collaboration, improvisation, and spatial skills.
I believe having ukeleles in the classroom would greatly widen the net for applying these skills. They can learn to play and sing at the same time, learn how chords and harmony physically work on a stringed instrument, and learn to play in a “band” setting with other folks. There is something more engaging and fundamentally understandable when teaching harmony on a multi-note instrument versus talking about it conceptually, especially with K-5 kids.
We already jam together as a class with percussion instruments, through singing, and sometimes just marching and dancing around the room to music. These Ukuleles would help us elevate that musical experience and bring a whole other level of jamming and collaboration to the class.
We would be so grateful if you chose to support this project! Your contribution would make a profound impact on our current and future students and community.
