My Students

Most of my students live in poverty and face unique struggles every day. They often have trouble relating to the books offered at school that are based on white, middle class characters. My students need books with characters who face the same types of struggles they have in their own lives.

About 85% of students in my school receive a free or reduced price lunch.

Students come from families struggling to make ends meet. Because of these struggles, education isn't always a priority at home, and many students don't have access to books beyond school.

My Project

I need this class set of 30 copies to teach a unit on the book Forged By Fire by Sharron Draper. I've taught this novel in the past, and students always love it. Students can relate to the main character as he faces the real-world struggles of abuse, poverty, and drugs.

Help me get my students exciting about reading.

Help me show them that there are books out there they can relate to. Help me show them that they can become engrossed in a story and not want to put it down!
